This week is designated as Compassion Sunday for ReCAST Church. We will be watching a promotional video for Compassion International and there will be opportunities to sponsor a child in need.
My family has sponsored Thong from Thailand for about 5 years now and it has been great for my children. They have written to Thong and kept up with him through his letters back to us.
It it is amazing that we are able to have an impact on a young man halfway around the world through such a small monthly donation. But this is not intended to be an informercial blog.
I would suggest that God desires for those of us who are well off to care for those who are struggling. The wealth that we have been given is not just so we can buy bigger houses or more gadgets. There is nothing wrong with gadgets and nice houses, but there is something wrong with wealthy people who have no mind or heart to help the poor.
Compassion is indeed a great way to reach out beyond our borders with love and compassion. But I would equally recommend your local food pantry, your local homeless shelter or gospel mission, and most importantly your local church. Get involved in the community, get involved in volunteering, and let some of your resources reach out to places where you cannot volunteer and you cannot be present.
